Chief wet sumping
After my 51 chief sits for a while it is collecting oil in the sump, (Wet sumping) what is the cause of this, is it wear in the oil pump? and what is the fix? IS it possible to make it so that the bike wont wet sump at all?

Jason,
There are probably more knowledgeable guys here, but what I've seen the check ball under the dist. drive is probably not seating properly, a light tap with a brass hammer may solve your problem.

As soon as i have time I will slip the pump off and check the ball spring and the seat in the pump

Hi Sorry for the delay, I have only just discovered this site. Any how, my advice is throw the pump away and fit a 47 pump, I have been down this path with my 52 daily rider, I tapped the ball, an still lost most my oil overnight, so I then fitted a slightly stronger spring (works on all my pommy bikes ) this starved my motor of oil at medium to high speed, wrecking a new motor with 250 mile on it. I then had the motor rebuilt, fitted the 47 timing cover and pump, also fitted an oil cooler and no more problems. You do not see the pump behind the distributor cover, If you have one that is.
