After my 51 chief sits for a while it is collecting oil in the sump, (Wet sumping) what is the cause of this, is it wear in the oil pump? and what is the fix? IS it possible to make it so that the bike wont wet sump at all?

Thanks Jason

Jason,

There are probably more knowledgeable guys here, but what I've seen the check ball under the dist. drive is probably not seating properly, a light tap with a brass hammer may solve your problem.

Jason, I lifted this from the Kiwi website, #8 maybe the culprit. Make sure that the ball and spring inside the gearbox is removed. HTH,

Hi Sorry for the delay, I have only just discovered this site. Any how, my advice is throw the pump away and fit a 47 pump, I have been down this path with my 52 daily rider, I tapped the ball, an still lost most my oil overnight, so I then fitted a slightly stronger spring (works on all my pommy bikes ) this starved my motor of oil at medium to high speed, wrecking a new motor with 250 mile on it. I then had the motor rebuilt, fitted the 47 timing cover and pump, also fitted an oil cooler and no more problems. You do not see the pump behind the distributor cover, If you have one that is.

Hope this helps

Chris
